Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)

Mothra vs. Godzilla is the second team up between Godzilla and another creature who previously had their own film. Honestly, I liked this one a lot better than King Kong vs. Godzilla. Mothra looked at lease normal, even if Godzilla still looked a little silly. What was with his upper lip thing? It looked like he had a droopy, floppy mustache? I just don’t understand. Anyway, the characters were fun. Not as colorful as previous movies, but not as dull as some others either. So, right down the middle, I’d say.

It was interesting to see Godzilla as a more antagonistic role. It’s true that he’s always been a bad guy, but when he was fighting Anguirus or whoever, it felt more natural disaster-y rather than “He must be stopped.” I don’t know. Seeing the humans call in someone else to stop Godzilla was interesting to see, is all.

There was a point where Mothra died, and the egg that she was protecting hatched, birthing two Mothra Larvae, which… I’m really not sure how Godzilla was unable to defeat them. Their final fight could be reduced to two things: 1. One of the larvae bit Godzilla’s tail, so he shook it off, and 2. both of them shot webbing at Godzilla until he got covered and fell into the sea. Which was, not very final, I’ll tell you.

Also, Godzilla was super clumsy in this one. He was constantly tripping over things, or slipping, or getting his tail caught on something. It was weird.

There was also a nice message to this move, one of humanity trusting and accepting one another, instead of being hostile and mean. People had to work together to stop Godzilla, and I liked that.

I’ll be honest, a lot of these movies are starting to feel a bit, same-y. I was expecting this. I mean, how much can you do in the 1960’s with no CGI, and the way stories were told back then? I’m hoping that future movies take more risks, and do different things. We’ll see next time, when we cover Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster! I’m super excited for this one, I’ve always liked Ghidorah, and I’m happy we’re finally gonna see him in action. See you then, everybody.
